Evolution of contacting rock surfaces and a slip - andtime - dependent fault constitutive

چکیده

By integrating eeects of microscopic interactions between statisticaly self-similar fault surfaces, we succeeded in deriving a slip-and time-dependent fault constitutive law that rationally uniies the slip-dependent law and the rate-and state-dependent law (Aochi and Matsu'ura, 199881]). In this con-stitutive law the slip-weakening results from the abrasion of surface asperities that proceeds irreversibly with fault slip. On the other hand, the restoration of shear strength after the arrest of fault slip results from the adhesion of surface asperities that proceeds with contact time. The slip-and time-dependent law can explain three basic experimental results; slip-weakening in high-speed slip, log t-healing in stationary contact, and velocity-weakening in steady state slip. Another interesting property expected from the uniied constitutive law is the gradual increase of the critical weakening displacement D c with stationary contact time.

Coulomb Constitutive Laws for Friction: Contrasts in Frictional Behavior for Distributed and Localized Shear

-We describe slip-rate dependent friction laws based on the Coulomb failure criteria. Frictional rate dependence is attributed to a rate dependence of cohesion c and friction angle qS. We show that differences in the stress states developed during sliding result in different Coulomb friction taws for distributed shear within a thick gouge layer versus localized shear within a narrow shear band ...

3D stochastic rock fracture modeling related to strike-slip faults

Fault zones and fault-related fracture systems control the mechanical behaviors and fluid-flow properties of the Earth’s crust. Furthermore, nowadays, modeling is being increasingly used in order to understand the behavior of rock masses, and to determine their characteristics. In this work, fault zones and fracture patterns are reviewed, and also comprehensive studies are carried out on the fr...

Experimental and Numerical Model Studies of Frictional Instability Seismic Sources

Stick-slip frictional instability is widely regarded as a viable mechanism for crustal earthquakes, particularly because of the way that it can be incorporated into the notion of earthquakes as episodic unstable slip events along preexisting zones or planes of weakness represented by faults in the Earth. In this thesis, detailed laboratory observations of stick-slip events generated on a simula...

The effect of shear load on frictional healing in simulated fault gouge

We report on frictional strengthening (healing) in granular quartz gouge as a function of time of true stationary contact. To distinguish between the slip-dependent [Ruina, 1983] and time-dependent [Dieterich, 1979] friction constitutive laws, we designed tests similar to conventional slide-hold-slide (SHS) tests except that shear load was completely removed prior to holds. We find large healin...

A Uni ed Comprehension for Fracture of Intact Rock , Frictional Slip Failure , and Earthquake Rupture , and Scaling of Scale - Dependent Physical

There are increasing amounts of evidence that earthquake rupture is a mixed process between what is called frictional slip failure and fracture of intact rock mass. In fact, there is a strong possibility that what is called a 'barrier' or 'asperity' on earthquake faults is a local patch of high rupture growth resistance whose strength equals the strength of intact rock. In addition, the lithost...
